We have used the International Phonetic Alphabet(IPA) to represent the standard accent of English spoken in south of England also called Received Pronunciation. The pronunciations in this site are strictly based on Oxford English Dictionary. Here is the key to phonetic respellings of the words
How to use the key?
I am explaining it with a simple example. Consider abacus. It is phonetically spelt as . This means the a in abacus is pronounced as the a in cat and ant as given in the key below.
Similarly, looking at the key you can say that b is pronounced the usual way. ab together is pronounced in the same way as you pronounce ab in absent.
Now you see an unfamiliar symbol . This is called schwa. If you see the key given below, it is nothing but a as in ago . Moving further, let us analyse ..."k
s ", k and s are pronounced the normal way. Together with a schwa shown earlier, it is pronounced as in circus.
Whenever you see ' , it means pause and then continue. Consider abnormal . After pronouncing ab-, give a pause and then pronounce -normal .
